SYNOP: (NWS SAN DIEGO)
Weak onshore flow will prevail through the weekend. Gusty offshore winds are expected to develop as early as Monday, with periods of offshore flow likely to continue through the upcoming week. Dry and seasonal weather, with warmer than average temperatures are expected through next week.

NWS LAS VEGAS SYNOP– (NORTH & EAST OF COUNTY)
Dry and warm conditions continuing through the weekend, with afternoon RH falling below 25 percent for most of the region. Unsettled weather arrives late Sunday, resulting in an increase in breezes and a cool down to start next week.

SPECIAL NOTES:
KEY POINTS

SANTA ANA WINDS: No major changes to the potential for a Santa Ana wind event next week. Computer models today have trended a little weaker with the winds, but there are still several days (and computer model runs) to analyze before finalizing the forecast. As of today, moderate to locally strong Santa Ana winds are forecast Monday night through Thursday.

FOG: Areas of dense fog late tonight over the coastal waters and in the coastal zones. Visibilities will fall to a ¼ mile or less in the areas that do see fog. The fog will dissipate by 9 AM Saturday. Similar fog potential
exists late Saturday night into Sunday morning.

CONFIDENCE AND DETAILS

Potential for moderate to strong Santa Ana Winds next Tuesday-Thursday

(Feb 18-20)

Low-Mod

Confidence

A Santa Ana pattern next week, its strength yet to be determined.

What: The potential exists for a moderate to strong Santa Ana wind event next week. It will ultimately depend on the strength and position of the surface high over the Great Basin.

Where: All of Southern California, with the strongest winds in the usual Santa Ana wind-prone mountain, foothill and inland valley areas.

When: Winds increasing Monday night, with the strongest winds Tuesday through Thursday.

Dense Fog Potential this weekend

Mod

Confidence

Pockets of late night and early morning dense fog this weekend from a shallow marine layer. The fog will be confined to the coastal zones and the coastal waters.

What: Dense fog with visibility ¼ mile or less.

Where: The coastal waters and land areas within 8 miles of the coast.

When: Late tonight through early Saturday morning, and late Saturday night through early Sunday morning.

SUMMARY

Moderate to strong north to northeast winds may impact the area next week Monday night through Thursday. We will evaluate model data through the weekend to determine the most likely scenario. We will have a better idea of the strength, coverage and impacts over the next few days.

Areas of dense fog will impact the coastal waters and areas within 8 miles of the coast this weekend.

============================================================
THIS DAY IN WEATHER HISTORY:
1998: El Niño continued. A powerful storm that started on 2/14 and ended on this day brought one to two inches of rainfall to coastal areas, three to five inches to the valleys and foothills. The San Luis Rey River left its banks in Pauma Valley, and numerous area roads were closed due to mudslides, high water and damaged bridges. A hillside slid into a restaurant in Laguna Beach, and a large sink hole forced the closure of Santiago Canyon Road for several days.

1992: A series of many intense storms started on 2/5 and ended on 2/16. The storms brought a total of 20+ inches of precipitation to the mountains and eight to16+ inches to lower elevations. Two were killed in an avalanche at Mt. Baldy. Flash flooding, mud slides, and road closures also occurred. A tornado in Camp Pendleton caused property damage at a mobile home park on this day.
