SYNOP:
…EXTREMELY DRY IN THE MOUNTAINS…
…BREEZY IN PARTS OF THE MOUNTAINS AND DESERTS
Low relative humidity levels will continue in the mountains and deserts.
Winds will be breezy during the afternoons and evenings on the desert mountains slopes, through passes, and into the deserts. These dry winds will increase the fire spread potential close to critical levels for a few hours each afternoon and evening in these areas.

A weak Pacific trough will remain stationary over the West Coast through the end of next week.

• S-W afternoon and evening winds of 15-25 mph with gusts to 40 mph will surface through the desert passes through the end of next week.
• Maximum temperatures will be near to 5 degrees below normal through the end of next week, with mid 60s to upper 70s across the mountains and mid 80s to mid 90s in the valleys.
• Minimum humidity will be 12%-25% away from the coastal areas this weekend and then drop into the single digits and teens next week.
• Nighttime humidity recovery will be less than 50% away from the coastal areas.
• No shower or thunderstorm activity is expected across the region through the forecast period.

Dry and gusty conditions are expected today, with the strongest winds expected across much of Southern Nevada with gusts of 30-40 mph expected. Lighter winds are expected Sunday though
patchy Red Flag conditions will remain possible across the southern Great Basin. Dry and occasionally breezy conditions are likely much of next week.

SPECIAL NOTES: NONE AT THIS TIME

DAILY FUELS/FIRE POTENTIAL:
• Even though it will be very dry over the next week, the potential for large fire will be low due to light winds away from the deserts.
• Live fuel moisture is near or below the critical 60% level across most of the region.
• Dead fuel moisture is mainly below the 10th percentile and it is breaking record low levels across the mountains of Southern California.
• ERCs are mainly between the 90th percentile and the 97th percentile across the region.
• Expect light initial attack activity to continue across the region through the end of next week.

THIS DAY IN WEATHER HISTORY:
2015: A Pacific trough tapped into remnant moisture from tropical cyclone Linda on this day. One to two inches of rain was common across the entire region. Widespread urban flooding resulted, and led to a major traffic jam during the morning commute in LA and Orange County. A debris flow hit Silverado Canyon. An impressive 2.39 inches fell in Los Angeles on this day, and 1.21 inches fell in San Diego, each the second highest daily amount for any day in September. In San Diego this value missed the wettest September day in history by only 0.02 inch (wettest September day was 1.23 inch on 9/30/1921).

1979: The temperature soared to 104° in La Mesa on this day, the hottest day of the year, and the 5th hottest day of the 1970s.

1910: The remnants of a tropical cyclone moved north, bringing heavy rains to Santa Barbara County. Over four inches fell in Ojai and over two inches fell in Santa Barbara. Only a trace fell in Los Angeles.

TROPICAL EAST PACIFIC REPORT:
For the eastern North Pacific…east of 140 degrees west longitude:

A large area of disturbed weather centered several hundred miles south of the southern coast of Mexico is associated with a trough of low pressure. This system is gradually becoming better
organized, and environmental conditions appear conducive for further development. A tropical depression is likely to form by Tuesday while the system moves generally west-northwestward at about 10 mph. Interests in Baja California Sur should monitor the progress of this disturbance.

* Formation chance through 48 hours…low…30 percent.

* Formation chance through 5 days…high…80 percent.
