THIS DAY IN WEATHER HISTORY:
2016: A strong, low latitude jet stream brought a series of storms through Southern California starting on this day and ending on 1/7. Three-day rainfall totals were around two to seven inches for the coast, valley and foothill areas, and one to three inches for the deserts. After several years of drought, this was the only precipitation event of significance during an otherwise disappointing strong El Niño season. The mountains received a wide range of snow amounts, ranging from six to 30 inches, most of which fell above 5000 feet. The highest amounts were in the San Bernardino and Riverside County Mountains, with 20 to 30 inches in several locations. Strong thunderstorm winds damaged eight buildings and downed power lines in Vista. A building roof collapsed in Miramar and also at a horse stable in Bonsall. Many trees in Sabre Springs were snapped, some as thick as 18 inches. A tree in Poway fell on a car. Widespread flooding resulted from heavy rain, with southwestern San Diego County being hardest hit. Floods buried cars in Ocean Beach and Mission Valley. High water rescues occurred on 1/6 around San Diego. Small mudslides, including boulders on highways were reported near Ramona, Redlands, Crestline, Orange, Rancho San Diego and De Luz. Three debris flows occurred in Silverado Canyon below a burn scar. Pea size hail fell in Orange County, Carlsbad and Poway. An airplane was struck by lightning on approach to San Diego airport on the morning of 1/7. A waterspout was observed off the coast at Cardiff on 1/6.
A funnel cloud was sighted by several people in south San Clemente on 1/7. One house was damaged, but most likely from a wet microburst.

2007: Offshore winds started on this day and continued peaking each morning until 1/8. Winds gusted to 84 mph at Fremont Canyon, 64 mph at Rancho Cucamonga, 63 mph at El Cariso, 62 mph at Rialto and 55 mph at Ontario. Downed power poles, tree limbs resulted. Trees fell on to homes and cars in Lake Arrowhead.

2000: Santa Ana winds started on this day and ended on 1/6. Wind gusts of 93 mph were recorded at Fremont Canyon, 60 mph in Ontario and 58 mph in Devore. Interstate 15 was closed.

1997: Storm winds on this day and on 1/6 produced a gust of 99 mph at Fremont Canyon and 58 mph elsewhere.

1992: A storm that started on this day and ended on 1/7 brought one to two inches of rainfall to the lower elevations. Six to 20 inches of snow fell in the mountains and two to eight inches fell in the foothills and high desert floors. Flooding and mud slides resulted.

1987: Heavy rain and snow from a powerful Pacific storm that started on 1/4 and ended on this day produced one to two plus inches of rainfall in the northern Inland Empire. 2.20 inches fell at Chino. Lots of street flooding occurred, including road washouts in the high desert. Up to 15 inches of snow fell in the San Bernardino Mountains. 1.68 inches fell at San Diego, Cuyamaca Park 2.73 inches, Julian 2.59 inches, Lemon Grove 1.52 inches, National City 1.40 inches, El Cajon 1.34 inches, Escondido 1.30 inches, Coronado 0.95 inch and Del Mar 0.80 inch. Two died on slick roads in San Diego County. The San Diego River flooded Mission Valley, stranding cars and closing roads, including Friars Rd. Lots of street flooding in Pacific Beach, Sorrento Valley and Spring Valley near the Sweetwater River. Sewage spilled into Mission Bay. Road washouts occurred in the high desert. Scattered power outages also resulted. Mud slides occurred on the Sunrise Highway. A mud slide in Pomona blocked traffic on the 60 freeway.

1979: A waterspout came ashore and became a tornado at Mission Beach. Several boats were tossed and damaged. A catamaran was tossed 50 feet on to the boardwalk, damaging it.
