SYNOP:A Pacific storm will drop slowly down the West Coast and then inland over Northern California bringing scattered showers to the region through Saturday afternoon. Most foothill and mountain locations will receive an additional 0.75 to 1.50 inches of rainfall and most coastal and valley locations will receive an additional 0.25 to 0.75 inch of rainfall with this storm.  The snow level will drop to between 5,000 and 6,000 feet by Wednesday and then down to between 4,000 and 5,000 feet by Saturday.  South to west winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 50 mph will surface across the wind prone mountain and desert areas through Saturday afternoon.  Temperatures will be near normal today, with upper 40s and 50s across the mountains and 60s to low 70s in the valleys.  Temperatures will be around 10 degrees below normal Wednesday through Saturday, with mid 30s to mid 40s across the mountains and 50s to low 60s in the valleys.  A weak ridge of high pressure will bring a little warming along with dry conditions and light winds Sunday and Monday.    NWS LAS VEGAS – (NORTH & EAST OF BARSTOW TO STATE LINE)

Ridge axis will shift east today as a deepening area of low pressure off the California coast begins to move inland. Winds will increase significantly today across Inyo, Esmeralda, and central Nye Counties and then the remainder of the area on Wednesday with precipitation chances confined to the Sierra and across

portions of central Nevada. Unsettled weather is expected to continue for the remainder of the week.

Santa Ana Wind Season Outlook

Issued: Monday, March 12, 2018

Discussion:

February had more Santa Ana wind days than normal across both the Los Angeles and San Diego areas. The overall synoptic pattern remained favorable for most incoming storms to pass to the north and east of the area due to upper level blocking across the eastern Pacific. For the Los Angeles area, there were 10 days in which Santa Ana conditions were met while the San Diego area had 6.

The long-wave upper-air pattern has finally shifted further west and has become more favorable for precipitation events across Southern California. This pattern change occurred around the beginning of March and looks to stay in place for the majority of the month. This current pattern lines up well with the sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly trends that have been occurring during the past month across the Equatorial and Central Pacific regions. The La Niña that has been occurring since the fall is now waning with SSTs steadily warming. The Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) is trending upwards and could very well be in a weakly positive phase in the coming months. All of this favors fewer than normal Santa Ana wind events across Southern California during both the March and the March through May time periods.

We are nearing the end of Santa Ana season with only a handful of events expected over the next couple of months. Normally March averages around 6 Santa Ana wind days across the Los Angeles area with around 3 days in San Diego. These numbers drop off dramatically by May as the upper flow becomes less conducive for bringing cold air into the Great Basin, which is necessary for such events to occur. Our analog models show that 2006, 2009, 2012, and 2017 were the best matches relating current SST anomalies to previous years, and most of those years resulted in a below normal number of Santa Ana days.

With the recent wet weather, fuels have become unfavorable for significant fire to occur across the region. And with the threat of more precipitation over the area, fire activity will be kept to a minimum, even during periods of Santa Ana winds.

Summary:

The current and projected weather patterns suggest that there will be a below normal number of Santa Ana wind days for both the March and the March through May time periods. Our analog models support this forecast and therefore confidence is high with this outlook. Fuel conditions are unsupportive of any significant fire activity even in times of windy, dry weather SANTA ANA WILDFIRE THREAT INDEX: GREY NO RATING /
