DAYS OF NO RAIN AT EAST HESPERIA: 03

SYNOP:Scattered showers will continue to move across the region through Saturday afternoon as a storm off the coast of the Pacific Northwest moves slowly southeast and inland across Northern California. Most locations will receive an additional quarter inch to an inch of rainfall, but the Sierra will receive an additional 1 to 2 inches of rainfall with this storm.  The snow level will be mainly between 5,000 and 6,000 feet, but it will drop to between 4,000 and 5,000 feet Saturday.  South to west winds of 20 to 30 mph will continue to surface across the wind prone mountain and desert locations through Saturday evening.  Temperatures will be below normal and cool a couple degrees each day through Saturday.  Maximum temperatures will be in the 40s to low 50s across the mountains and mid 50s to mid 60s in the valleys today.  A weak ridge of high pressure will bring a slow warming and drying trend to the region Sunday and Monday.  Winds will be light Sunday and Monday.  Another potential storm may affect the region Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, with more precipitation and strong south to west winds.

The forecast remains on track with a series of Pacific Storms bringing widespread but mainly light precipitation through early next week. Here is a breakdown of the storm systems expected:

  • 1st storm Tuesday night through Wednesday morning
    • high snow levels
    • light amounts
  • 2nd storm Thursday
    • high snow levels
    • light to moderate amounts
  • 3rd storm Saturday
    • lower snow levels (4000-5000 feet)
    • strong winds possible
    • light precip amounts
  • Another storm possible next Tuesday or Wednesday

NWS LAS VEGAS – (NORTH & EAST OF BARSTOW TO STATE LINE)

An area of low pressure moving into the region will help produce gusty southwest winds across much of southeast California, southern Nevada and northwest Arizona. Precipitation chances will mainly be confined to the Sierra, central Nevada and far northern Mohave County, but rainfall amounts are expected to remain less than tenth of an inch with the exception of the Sierra.

Some lingering showers are expected Thursday, but coverage is expected to be less. Cooler and unsettled weather will continue through the weekend.

SPECIAL NOTES:

Santa Ana Wind Season Outlook

Issued: Monday, March 12, 2018

Discussion:

February had more Santa Ana wind days than normal across both the Los Angeles and San Diego areas. The overall synoptic pattern remained favorable for most incoming storms to pass to the north and east of the area due to upper level blocking across the eastern Pacific. For the Los Angeles area, there were 10 days in which Santa Ana conditions were met while the San Diego area had 6.

The long-wave upper-air pattern has finally shifted further west and has become more favorable for precipitation events across Southern California. This pattern change occurred around the beginning of March and looks to stay in place for the majority of the month. This current pattern lines up well with the sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly trends that have been occurring during the past month across the Equatorial and Central Pacific regions. The La Niña that has been occurring since the fall is now waning with SSTs steadily warming. The Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) is trending upwards and could very well be in a weakly positive phase in the coming months. All of this favors fewer than normal Santa Ana wind events across Southern California during both the March and the March through May time periods.

We are nearing the end of Santa Ana season with only a handful of events expected over the next couple of months. Normally March averages around 6 Santa Ana wind days across the Los Angeles area with around 3 days in San Diego. These numbers drop off dramatically by May as the upper flow becomes less conducive for bringing cold air into the Great Basin, which is necessary for such events to occur. Our analog models show that 2006, 2009, 2012, and 2017 were the best matches relating current SST anomalies to previous years, and most of those years resulted in a below normal number of Santa Ana days.

Summary:

The current and projected weather patterns suggest that there will be a below normal number of Santa Ana wind days for both the March and the March through May time periods. Our analog models support this forecast and therefore confidence is high with this outlook. Fuel conditions are unsupportive of any significant fire activity even in times of windy, dry weather SANTA ANA WILDFIRE THREAT INDEX: GREY NO RATING /
