SYNOP: (NWS SAN DIEGO)
Dry weather with periods of weak to locally moderate strength offshore flow will prevail into Sunday with lower inland humidity and with periods of gusty northeast winds along and near the coastal slopes of the mountains and below passes and canyons. Weak onshore flow will develop near the coast early next week. There will be a warming trend through Sunday with cooling beginning to spread inland on Monday. A chance for precipitation will return around the middle of next week.

NWS LAS VEGAS SYNOP– (NORTH & EAST OF COUNTY)
High pressure building across the Western U.S. will result in dry conditions with a warming trend through the weekend. High temperatures will climb several degrees above normal by early next week. Shower chances return to the region by the middle of next week as Pacific weather systems approach the Southwest

SPECIAL NOTES:
BI-MONTHLY FUELS DISCUSSION
For Southern and Central California

Updated: Thursday March 14th, 2019
Next Routine Update: Thursday, March 28th, 2019

General Discussion:
After the district was lashed by heavy rain and mountain snow, a break from the wet winter pattern arrived the week of the March 10th. Rainfall amounts were still above 2″ during the past two weeks near higher terrain, but many lower elevations experienced under a half inch of rainfall. The first offshore wind in months
occurred across Southern California starting on the 13th, but resource demand continued to be minimal due to wet fuel conditions.
Dead, fine fuel moisture will begin to decline over the next two weeks due to the expectation of drier weather. However, unlike past wet years which saw rapid drying due to hot late March weather, no strong offshore winds or hot periods of weather are expected through the end of the month. This should allow a much more
gradual transition from the traditional end of “rainy season” into spring.

DAILY FUELS/FIRE POTENTIAL:
No large fire activity is anticipated across the region through the forecast period.

SANTA ANA WILDFIRE THREAT INDEX: TODAY: GREY-NO RATING
Gusty, offshore winds will continue through midday Saturday, but the strongest winds will occur this morning. https://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=sgx&wwa=wind%20advisory … Much warmer and drier conditions can be expected, but high fuel moisture will preclude large fire activity

THIS DAY IN WEATHER HISTORY:
2015: Strong high pressure and Santa Ana conditions boosted temperatures into the 90s across the coast and valleys from 3/13 through this day, and cooling only into the 60s at night. Numerous daily high maximum and daily high minimum records were set. On 3/13 the warmest reading of 96° in Santa Ana was reached. Highest minimum temperatures were 68° in Santa Ana and San Diego on 3/15.

1986: A powerful, cold and unstable storm dropped heavy rain across the region. Almost three inches of rain fell in Fallbrook, more than two inches in Julian, 1.42 inches in San Diego and 1.18 inch in LA. A Compton boy died when swept away in the LA River. Heavy rain and snow that started on 3/15 and ended on this day caused mud slides along the coast in Orange County and in Malibu. Three feet of snow fell in the San Bernardino Mountains. On this day at 530 am a tornado struck Anaheim about two miles northeast of Disneyland. It was on the ground for about 1.25 miles and was about 20-40 yards wide. The tornado damaged a factory, ripped chunks of roof from eight homes and flipped two large trucks. Gusts and debris broke windows, toppled trees and fences. Mature trees were snapped off at the trunk. A funnel cloud was also observed in San Diego Mira Mesa.

1982: A storm that started on this day and ended on 3/18 produced two to four inches of rain in San Diego County. Local flooding closed many streets.

1977: A tornado touched down several times along an eight-mile path from Fullerton to Brea. The tornado’s path was 2,000 feet wide at its widest point, four people were injured and over 100 homes and business were damaged.

1964: Strong Santa Ana winds downed trees and power lines, damaged homes, overturned parked planes, and fanned wildfires. Damages from the fires alone reached into the millions of dollars. The same areas were hit by mudslides and debris flows a week later when heavy rains fell over recently burned ground.
