Periods of mostly light showers with lowering snow levels will continue into Friday night with somewhat greater coverage and amounts for tonight into early Friday. There will also be periods of stronger and gusty southwest to west winds in the mountains and deserts. Saturday will be mostly dry and a little warmer with more showers for Sunday through early next week

DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN…Thursday through Tuesday

Periods of widespread precipitation will return to the outlook area late Thursday night through Friday evening. The heaviest precipitation will concentrate across western and northern Utah through early Friday evening, then focus on the northern mountain late Friday night. Snow levels will lower on Friday, with snow expected at all elevations of northern and central Utah by late in the day or the evening. Significant accumulations of snow are
expected across the mountains and some of the higher northern valleys.

The next storm system will track east across southern Arizona early next week. Some of the precipitation associated with this storm could work north into the southern half of the state late Monday through Tuesday.

THIS DAY IN WEATHER HISTORY:
2016: Two lines of thunderstorms came ashore in Orange and San Diego Counties. Thunderstorm winds caused considerable damage with numerous trees down blocking roadways and damage to roofs, windows, and cars. A lightning strike caused a roof fire at a house in Laguna Niguel.

2013: Toward the end of a very dry winter, a much needed storm system brought rain and mountain snow to the region. Up to two inches of rain fell along the coastal slopes with more than an inch for much of San Diego County.

2012: A strong cold front moved through the region, bringing strong mountain wave activity to the deserts. Wind gusts reached 63 mph at Borrego Springs and 62 mph at Ocotillo Wells. Property damage resulted to homes, park structures, and RVs. A golf cart was hurled into a mobile home.

2000: A waterspout was observed ten miles west of San Clemente and a funnel cloud was two miles west of La Jolla.

1992: A series of storms that began on 3/1 and ended on this day brought one to four inches of rainfall and local flooding.

1974: Several funnel clouds were reported in the vicinity of San Clemente Island.

1972: It was 80° in Big Bear Lake, the highest temperature on record for March.

1968: Heavy rain that began on 3/6 ended on 3/8. One drowning death resulted. There was local flooding and damage to buildings, homes, and schools, including homes in Ontario and Chino on this day. Debris flows closed several highways. Lightning struck three citrus trees in southwest San Bernardino County.

1964: Two waterspouts were observed, one off Oceanside and one off La Jolla. A strong fire whirl (whirlwind induced by strong rising air in the vicinity of the fire) formed near a brush fire in Santa Barbara. Winds from the fire whirl downed several trees and severely damaged two homes, three cars, a chicken coop and a barn.

1952: 2.40 inches of rain fell in San Diego starting on this day and ending on 3/8, the greatest 24-hour amount on record for March. It rained 3.42 inches in Santa Ana on this day, the greatest daily amount on record for March.
