 SYNOP:

Very low humidities will continue today except near the coast with weakening east winds near the coastal foothills. Continued very low inland humidities on Sunday combined with gusty west winds in

the mountains and deserts will increase the fire potential in the afternoon and evening. Stronger onshore flow will spread cooling and higher coastal humidities inland for Sunday night through

Tuesday with strong southwest to west winds in the mountains and deserts for Sunday night through Monday evening. Another low pressure system moving inland through the western states will

bring another round of stronger and gusty west winds for the mountains and deserts for Thursday into Thursday evening.

NWS LAS VEGAS – (NORTH & EAST OF BARSTOW TO STATE LINE)

Quiet and warmer weather can be expected today before the next storm begins to affect the region Sunday and Monday.

Winds will increase Sunday and especially Monday accompanied by low relative humidity. Temperatures will be near normal Monday and well below normal Tuesday. The best chances for rain and snow Monday and Monday night will remain north of Las Vegas.

CHANGES SINCE PREVIOUS BRIEFING

Issued a Fire Weather Watch for the lower Colorado River and Mohave County Monday morning – Monday evening. Expect to see a large area of sustained winds 20 mph or greater with gusts in excess of 35 mph. Minimum relative humidity values will lower to between 8 and 15 percent.

FORECAST DETAILS

SE California / NW Arizona / Southern NV

Winds will increase across the southern Sierra and Owens Valley as early as Sunday afternoon and evening with a brief period of localized downslope winds possible. If confidence increases on downslope wind potential, the forecast wind speed graphics will be revised higher. On Monday strong winds will spread across the I-15 corridor including Las Vegas. Once again, strongest winds are expected near the higher terrain and downslope areas, where gusts over 50 mph are likely.

Strong winds combined with dry fuels will create a renewed period of potentially high fire danger in northwest Arizona and along the Colorado River Monday.

Fire Potential Discussion: Large fire potential will be elevated in a few areas of Southern CA through Saturday due to very warm temperatures, low RH and locally gusty offshore winds. The greatest threat of a start will be in areas south and east of Los Angeles County which largely missed the rains earlier this month.  These areas are seeing rapid curing of what little grass has grown and live fine fuel moisture will be insufficient to stop new ignitions which occur in windy areas. Look for shifting winds Saturday evening due to a return of onshore flow.  Elevated large fire potential will shift into the desert interface areas early next week where strong winds can be expected.  Light IA will be possible through the period

SPECIAL NOTES:

BI-MONTHLY FUELS DISCUSSION

For Southern and Central California

Updated: Thursday, April 12th, 2018

Next Routine Update: Thursday, April 26th, 2018

General Discussion:

An active weather pattern continued through the end of March and into early April as a series of troughs entered the Pacific Northwest. These storms continued to bring significant rain to the northern half of the state. Another “atmospheric river” type of precipitation event occurred the first week of April which resulted in high rainfall totals and high snow levels across northern California. The district was generally on the periphery of the precipitation, but cool, humid onshore flow kept fine fuels from drying too much during the past few weeks.

However, the far southern part of the state, generally south and east of Los Angeles County, have seen the first signs of curing. The next warm and dry period will likely bring extensive and rapid curing to these areas

with fine fuels becoming available for ignition. These same fuel beds will see dead fuels drop back to below normal moisture levels toward the southern border by the end of the month. Therefore, fires will spread during

warm or windy periods across the desert interface areas and intermediate valleys from Los Angeles County southward.

Further north, a heavy, green grass crop will likely keep fires at bay outside the desert regions.

The next two weeks appear to offer a highly variable weather pattern with a 3-4 day vacillation between deep troughs and strong ridges. Temperatures will likely fluctuate accordingly with some light precipitation possible

across the far northern part of the district. One or two weak offshore wind events of short duration will be possible through the last week of the month.

SANTA ANA WILDFIRE THREAT INDEX: GREY NO RATING /

NO RATING: Sundowner winds are either not expected, or will not contribute to significant fire activity.

MARGINAL: Upon ignition, fires may grow rapidly.

MODERATE: Upon ignition, fires will grow rapidly and will be difficult to control.

HIGH: Upon ignition, fires will grow very rapidly, will burn intensely, and will be very difficult to control

EXTREME: Upon ignition, fires will have extreme growth, will burn very intensely, and will be uncontrollable.
