==============================================================================
SOUTH OPS WX:
Near to slightly above average temperatures will persist the next couple of days as an upper-level ridge amplifies along the West Coast. Cooling and a chance of precipitation will accompany a potent low-pressure system aloft as it traverses across the region Sunday through Tuesday. A general troughing pattern will develop with the passage of the cyclone, keeping conditions relatively cool and humid for the remainder of the forecast period.

ꞏ Strong winds will continue through the eastern slopes of the Tehachapi Range and southern Santa Barbara County/I-5 corridor before subsiding overnight. Winds will remain between 30 to 40 mph with occasional gusts exceeding 50 mph.

ꞏ Gusty northerly winds of 10 to 20 mph will develop through the mountains of the Central Coast and San Joaquin Valley in the early evening and will diminish before midnight.

ꞏ Temperatures will be near average for Central California while Southern California runs a few degrees above average through Sunday.

ꞏ Forecast high temperatures today for the mountains will be in the 60’s to mid-70’s, valleys will be in the 70’s to low 80’s, and lower elevation deserts will be in the upper 80’s to 90’s.

ꞏ Dry conditions over the next several days will be limited to the mountain areas east into adjacent deserts.Minimum RH each afternoon will drop below 30%.

ꞏ Showers will be likely Monday through early Wednesday with totals remaining under a quarter of an inch across the forecast area outside of the Sierras.

ꞏ Westerly to southwesterly winds will intensify to 20 to 30 mph Sunday, mainly impacting the mountain passes to the Antelope Valley and Mojave Desert.

SYNOP: (NWS SAN DIEGO)
High pressure will continue the warming trend into Saturday with Saturday high temperatures a few degrees above average. A low pressure system will move inland through the western states early next week. Slow cooling will begin on Sunday with greater cooling for Monday and Tuesday along with stronger and gusty southwest to west winds in the mountains and deserts. Warming is then expected for next Wednesday.

NWS LAS VEGAS SYNOP– (NORTH & EAST OF COUNTY)
Dry and warm weather expected through the end of the week. For next week, a potent Pacific system will bring strong winds to Inyo county and the southern Great Basin Sunday through Monday, with critical fire weather possible as afternoon humidity remains near and below 15 percent, trending a bit higher for Monday, but with higher wind speeds. Shower and storm chances shift east from the Sierra Nevada on Monday across the southern Great Basin for Tuesday along with much cooler temperatures.
A Fire Weather Watch remains in effect for portions of Inyo County and the southern Great Basin Sunday and Monday.

DAILY FUELS/FIRE POTENTIAL:
Fuel moisture continues to climb towards the average mark through the dead fuels due to the near seasonal temperatures and relatively humid conditions. Considering this coupled with the expected arrival of the low-pressure system, fire activity will be light over the forecast period.

THIS DAY IN WEATHER HISTORY:
2014: Strong high pressure and a strong late-season Santa Ana wind event combined to bring record high temperatures exceeding 100° to most of the lower elevations from 5/13 to this day. Many all-time high temperature records for the month of May were broken. On this day most temperatures at lower elevations were in the 100s. This day was the hottest when it was 106° in Yorba Linda and the San Diego Wild Animal Park. The strong Santa Ana winds gusted to 40 to 45 mph in parts of the coast and valleys, and 60 to 80 mph in the foothills. The winds knocked down many trees and power lines, and blew off some roof tiles. 14 fires erupted in San Diego County, killing one, burning over 27,000 acres and causing more than $50 million in property damage. The Poinsettia fire in Carlsbad and the Cocos Fire in San Marcos damaged homes.

1987: The monsoon made a very early visit. Thunderstorms arrived in the mountains and deserts. 0.20 inch fell in Mt. Laguna.

1962: A strong storm system arrived in in Southern California, producing thunderstorms, mountain snow and very strong winds in the deserts. From the Coachella Valley to the Imperial Valley, cars were sand blasted and crops were damaged. Lightning in the Angeles National Forest started five major fires. At higher elevations this late season snow storm caused numerous accidents.
