WEATHER AND IMPACTS OUTLOOK

CONFIDENCE AND DETAILS

Hazardous Conditions for Small Craft

High Confidence

Hazardous conditions for small craft in the outer waters (30 to 60 nm offshore) due to gusty west to northwest winds and mixed swell.

Forecast Details

What: A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for west to northwest winds gusting 20 to 25 knots, with combined seas of 6 to 8 feet.

Where: Outer coastal waters, from 30 nm to 60 nm offshore, strongest winds will be near San Clemente Island.

When: Strongest winds will occur late this afternoon into the evening before weakening later tonight.

Weak System to Bring Gusty Winds, Possible Light Rain Early Next Week

Moderate Confidence

Gusty west winds will affect mountains, deserts, and outer coastal waters early next week. Low-impact light rain will also be possible.

Forecast Details

What: Strong west winds gusting to 35 to 45 mph, locally up to 55 mph are likely. Light showers are possible, having low impact.

Where: Winds affecting outer coastal waters, mountains, deserts, and passes. Likely strongest through San Gorgonio Pass and I-8 corridor east of Campo. Precipitation most likely over and west of the mountains.

When: Winds increase late Sunday through Tuesday. Showers are possible Monday through Tuesday, most likely during the overnight and morning hours.

SUMMARY

Gusty winds and choppy seas will continue to generate conditions hazardous to small craft in the outer coastal waters through tonight. Otherwise, seasonal weather is expected with slight warming through Saturday. Areas of low clouds and localized valley fog are possible each night and morning.

Cooler conditions can be expected Sunday through Tuesday as a weak storm system moves over the US West Coast. This system will generate gusty winds in the mountains, passes, deserts, and outer coastal waters beginning late Sunday. A few light showers can be expected over and west of the mountains at times Monday and Tuesday. The coolest day of the week will be Tuesday, when high temperatures could be close to 20 degrees below normal in some valley locations. Warmer conditions will start to return Wednesday.

SYNOP: (NWS SAN DIEGO)
Dry, seasonal weather is on tap this weekend as a weak ridge drifts overhead. A late-season storm system will move across the state on Monday and Tuesday bringing rain and mountain snow to our
north, and windy, cooler weather here in the south (with a few sprinkles and light showers possible). Night and morning coastal low clouds and fog will gradually increase in coverage through Tuesday morning as the marine layer deepens. A few light showers are also possible west of the mountains Tuesday. Then look for some moderation of temperatures back to near normal mid to late next week.

ꞏ High temperatures will continue to run near or slightly above average today with mountains reaching the 60’s to mid 70’s, valleys will be in the upper 70’s to mid 80’s, and lower elevation deserts reaching the upper 80’s to 90’s.

ꞏ Temperatures will begin to decrease tomorrow, shedding around 3 to 5 degrees from today. Further cooling will drop highs around 10 degrees below normal by Monday.

ꞏ West to southwesterly winds will develop late in the afternoon to early evening, reaching 20 to 30 mph with occasional gusts over 40 mph through the mountain passes into the Antelope Valley and adjacent deserts.

ꞏ Generally dry conditions will persist through the mountains and into the deserts for another day or two, dropping below 30% each afternoon. Strong onshore flow will guide moisture further inland, increasing humidity’s through the mountain areas beginning Sunday.

ꞏ A few showers will be possible late Sunday through early Wednesday with meager totals expected. Any developing showers will distribute less than a quarter of an inch through the forecast area except for the Sierras.

ꞏ A minor warming trend will elevate high temperatures to near normal late next week.

NWS LAS VEGAS SYNOP– (NORTH & EAST OF COUNTY)
Strong winds will combine with low RH to produce critical fire weather, mainly over southern/central Nevada on
Sunday, then spreading into northwest Arizona on Monday. Winds will decrease briefly Sunday evening, which may allow for some moisture recovery between consecutive strong wind days. A quick round of showers and thunderstorms will move across the area Tuesday, mainly confined to the southern Great Basin. Cooler and calmer conditions expected Tuesday onward.

SPECIAL NOTES:
N/A

DAILY FUELS/FIRE POTENTIAL:
Dead fuel moisture continues to climb to or have already exceeded normal levels across many PSA’s given the lack of exceptionally warm and dry conditions over the last week. The current state of fuels coupled with cooler and relatively humid weather will suppress fire activity over the next week. Expect initial attack activity to remain light through the forecast period.
