SYNOP:Temperatures will warm and humidity will lower across the area through Saturday as high pressure over California strengthens. Maximum temperatures will be in the mid 50s to mid 60s across the mountains, 60s in the Central California valleys, and 70s in the Southern California valleys today.  Temperatures will warm another 3 to 5 degrees across the coastal and valley areas Saturday.  Minimum humidity will be mainly between 15% and 30% away from the Central Valley and coast today and then drop into the single digits and teens Saturday.  Northeast winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 40 mph will surface across the mountains and below the canyons and passes of Southern California tonight through Saturday morning. A slow cooling trend and a slow increase in humidity will occur Sunday through the middle of next week as the ridge of high pressure weakens and zonal flow takes place.  A Pacific trough will bring below normal temperatures and possible showers to the region late next week.  At this time, it looks as though rainfall accumulations will be on the light side. NWS LAS VEGAS – (NORTH & EAST OF BARSTOW)

High pressure taking over will result in above normal

temperatures, bouts of high cloudiness, and increasing breezes down

the Colorado River Valley this weekend. Ridge will weaken next week

allowing for potentially a more active weather pattern by late week. Fire Potential Discussion: There will be little or no fire activity across the region through the forecast period.

SPECIAL NOTES: SAFETY REMINDER ABOUT FLASH FLOOD AND DEBRIS FLOWS

It is extremely important for everyone in the hazard areas to continue to pay close attention to the weather forecasts and to know your escape route, whether it is leading to higher ground or evacuating the area all together. Unless you are in a low lying area, sheltering in place may be your best option, since roads throughout the urban area will flood as was observed during the last heavy rain storm which came thru Southern California. Do not drive across any flooded areas as debris flows are very powerful and may easily flip a vehicle even when flows are only a foot deep.

Unfortunately, the risk of debris flows and flooding during heavy rains in areas below the fire will continue until the vegetation has recovered enough to protect the soil this can occur even in areas that have already flooded. Areas below the fire that were not affected in this last storm could be affected in future storms and will be at high risk of debris flows and flooding. Many areas have not received high enough rainfall intensities to produce these affects but could in future storms. Vegetation usually takes two to five years to fully recover after a fire, but significant re-growth and protection can take place even after one growing season.

As previously stated above, it is of the utmost importance to pay close attention to each weather alert, regardless of whether previous alerts resulted in debris flows and flooding or not. All areas below the fire will remain very hazardous throughout the 2018 rainy season.

ON THIS DAY:

2013: A cold and dry air mass produced a significant freeze in all areas away from the coast on this day and 1/13. Low temperatures dropped to the 30s near the coast, 20s inland and in the low deserts, and the low teens in the high desert, which caused some water pipe damage. A frigid -8 degrees was recorded at Big Bear City – Shay Meadows.

2009: Santa Ana winds and a strong ridge of high pressure brought unseasonable warm weather to the region. The low temperature in Santa Ana only dropped to 73° (a record for January). This reading was 26 degrees higher than the average low temperature and three degrees higher than the average high temperature.

2007: Three inches of snow fell in Yucaipa. One inch fell in Highland and Redlands. Trace amounts of snow fell as low as 500 feet in elevation in the Inland Empire.

2000: A funnel cloud was observed 12 miles west of Mission Beach.

1997: A storm that started on this day and ended on 1/13 gave the coastal areas and valleys one to three inches of rainfall. Snow continued in the mountains and as of 1/15, 18 inches of snow had fallen at Mt. Laguna. Generally, 18 inches to three feet of snow was reported above 2500 feet. The ski resort at Snow Valley remained open until 5/18, the latest in its 78 year history. Dime size hail up to one foot deep covered a small area in Buena Park and Cypress. 13 illegal immigrants died from exposure near Pine Valley. On this day a waterspout was reported two miles southwest of Lindbergh Field – San Diego and came ashore as a tornado at Shelter Island, causing damage to the resort.

1996: Elsinore topped out with an afternoon high temperature of 91°, a record for January. This is one of only three times the city has seen a 90 degree reading in January since records began in 1897.

1993: A very wet series of storms that began on 1/6 and ended on 1/19 produced 20 to 50 inches of precipitation in the mountains and up to 12 inches at lower elevations over a two week period. It was one of the longest periods of consecutive days of rain on record (14) and measurable rain fell nearly every day from 1/2 to 1/19. Flooding and flash flooding, mud slides, etc., resulted.

1987: Waves of six to nine feet with sets up to 12 feet hit the coast. One suspected drowning occurred and an 11 foot boat was swamped at Channel Islands Harbor.

1949: It was 2° in Victorville, the third lowest temperature on record. The lowest temperatures on record occurred a few days later: 0° on 1/16/1949 and -1° on 1/17. 43 inches of snow fell at Palomar Mountain from 1/10 to 1/13, the greatest snowfall on record. A strong offshore wind developed after a cold winter storm. A 49 mph gust was observed in LA.

1882: A cold winter storm that started on this day and ended on 1/14 brought lots of snow to the lowlands. 15 inches of snow fell at San Bernardino. Three feet of snow fell in Campo over four days. Two to five inches fell in outlying San Diego, including four inches along Poway Grade, three inches at El Cajon and one inch in Poway. Light snow fell in Del Mar. Snowflakes fell, but did not stick at San Diego Lindbergh Field. Birds and livestock were killed and telegraph lines were knocked down. 2.49 inches of precipitation fell in San Diego on this day, the tenth wettest calendar day on record and the second wettest January day. This day was also remarkable in that low temperature records were set for both the minimum and maximum temperatures.
