SYNOP:

High pressure aloft will continue dry weather into Thursday.

Offshore flow will bring gusty northeast winds to 45 mph through

and below passes and canyons and near coastal foothills into this

afternoon with elevated fire weather conditions for those areas

for the late morning into the afternoon. Weak onshore flow will

return for Monday through Wednesday with slow cooling spreading

inland. Slightly warmer for Thursday…then a low pressure system

moving inland through California on Friday will bring cooling…

strong gusty west winds in the mountains and deserts…and a

chance of mostly light precipitation.

NWS LAS VEGAS – (NORTH & EAST OF BARSTOW TO STATE LINE)

High pressure will result in above normal

temperatures, bouts of high cloudS, and locally windy conditions

down the Colorado River Valley through weekend. The ridge will

weaken next week allowing for potentially a more active weather

pattern by later in the week.

Fire Potential Discussion: There will be little or no fire activity across the region through the forecast period.

ON THIS DAY:

2013: A cold and dry air mass produced a significant freeze in all areas away from the coast on 1/12 and on this day. Low temperatures dropped to the 30s near the coast, 20s inland and in the low deserts, and the low teens in the high desert, which caused some water pipe damage. A frigid -8 degrees was recorded at Big Bear City – Shay Meadows.

2009: The minimum temperature at Santa Ana of 73° not only set a record high minimum temperature for the date and month, but also for the entire winter season. Incredibly, the minimum is tied for the 23rd highest minimum temperature on record (and this was in January!). Persistent Santa Ana winds and strong high pressure were the causes.

2007: A trace of snow was reported in Rancho Bernardo, Escondido, Chula Vista, El Cajon and La Mesa. A cold snap settled over Southern California. Some remarkable records were set, particularly on this day and on 1/14. -7° at Fawnskin, -2° at Big Bear City and Wrightwood, 5° at Hesperia and Mt. Laguna, 10° at Borrego Airport, 12° at Campo, 16° at Ramona, 18° at Thermal, 19° in Hemet, 20° at Camp Pendleton. $114.7 million in crop damage in San Diego Co. $86 million in Riverside Co. $11.1 in San Bernardino Co. $600 thousand damage from broken pipes in San Bernardino Co. All three counties were declared disaster areas.

1997: A storm that started on 1/12 and ended on this day gave the coastal areas and valleys one to three inches of rainfall. Snow continued in the mountains and as of 1/15, 18 inches of snow had fallen at Mt. Laguna. Generally 18 inches to three feet of snow were reported above 2500 feet, but up to four feet accumulated in the San Gorgonio Wilderness Area. The ski resort at Snow Valley remained open until 5/18, the latest in its 78 year history. Dime size hail up to one foot deep covered a small area in Buena Park and Cypress. 13 illegal immigrants died from exposure near Pine Valley.

1993: A very wet series of storms that began on 1/6 and ended on 1/19 produced 20 to 50 inches of precipitation in the mountains and up to 12 inches at lower elevations over a two week period. This day marked the start of seven consecutive days (the most on record) of measurable precipitation in Victorville, which ended on 1/19. This also occurred on 2/18-2/24/2005, 2/14-2/20/1980, and 12/22-12/28/1971. Measurable rain fell nearly every day from 1/2 to 1/19 in San Diego County. Flooding and flash flooding, mud slides, etc., resulted.

1984: A tornado in Huntington Beach damaged a mobile home.

1963: The Western US chilled out more than usual when a massive arctic air mass descended on the region. The cold dry air mass filtered through the mountains into Southern California, helping Alpine (19°) and Vista (21°) set all-time record low temperatures.

1952: A series of storms brought heavy rain and mountain snow to the region starting this day and ending on 1/18. 5.52 inches fell in San Bernardino over the six days. Flooding was reported in Upland and Ontario. Heavy snow hit the San Bernardino Mountains with 40 inches in Lake Arrowhead (with a snow depth of 46 inches), and 37 inches in Big Bear Lake. All mountain roads were blocked and closed because of snow slides.

1949: 43 inches of snow fell at Palomar Mountain from 1/10 to this day, the greatest storm snowfall on record. On this day 20 inches fell, the greatest daily snowfall on record for January and the third greatest daily snowfall on record.

1882: A cold winter storm that started on 1/12 and ended on 1/14 brought lots of snow to the lowlands. 15 inches of snow fell at San Bernardino. 3 feet of snow fell in Campo over four days. Two to five inches fell in outlying San Diego, including four inches along Poway Grade, three inches at El Cajon and one inch in Poway. Light snow fell in Del Mar. Snowflakes fell, but did not stick at San Diego Lindbergh Field. Birds and livestock were killed and telegraph lines were knocked down.
